Is there a Is There a Blepharitis Treatment Through Homeopathy?

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

This is a republishing of a question from my blog regarding a blepheritis treatment using homeopathic remedies

blepharitis-treatmentBlepharitis
Do you have any homeopathic remedy which you recommend for people with Blepharitis?
Thanks for letting me know and keep up the great work!

Elena R.

Dear Elena,

Blepharitis can cause a real annoying problem with the eyes with itching, burning and light sensitivity. Alternative therapies can help! Blepharitis is a chronic condition related to an underlying infection of the eyelids and often associated with dry eyes. As a homeopathic doctor I believe it is necessary to treat the underlying problem. DO NOT use antibiotics or steroids! These medications suppress the cause of the problem and there is also the danger of developing resistant bacterial organisms.

  • The first step is good lid hygiene. Use nightly lid scrubs with diluted baby shampoo (50% water and 50% baby shampoo) and gently scrub the margin of the eyelashes.
  • Shift your diet towards organic living foods and avoid all processed food/ preservatives.
  • Drink plenty of water- proper hydration is the best way to detoxify your body. The rule of thumb is to drink ½ of your body weight in OZ. of water.
  • Keep your eyes lubricated. I suggest using Homeopathic dry eye drops.
  • You might try eye compresses or eye soaks using Euphrasia or Eyebright Tea. Obtain some Euphrasia tea bags and soak them in hot water.
  • Use a clean cloth and soak your eyes twice a day for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Begin taking extra omega 3 fatty acids. This will help to reduce the inflammation of your eyelids.

Homeopathic Allergy Eye Drops Are Effective As One Of The Natural Remedies For Allergies

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Homeopathic allergy eye drops are one of the natural remedies for allergies that treat eye allergies. Homeopathic remedies for treating ocular allergies are safe and effective, according to two clinicians.

“Homeopathic treatment of allergies is the best way to go, because it is not suppressive,” Edward C. Kondrot, MD, CCH, in private practice in Phoenix, said in an interview with PRIMARY CARE OPTOMETRY NEWS referring to homeopathic allergy eye drops. “A lot of the steroidal preparations and other pharmaceutical drops really mask the symptoms.” This is unlike natural remedies for allergies.

According to Dr. Kondrot, homeopathic medicine is based on the law of similars. “A substance that produces symptoms in a healthy person will treat those same symptoms in a diseased state,” he said.

There are many examples of allergy desensitization, such as an allergist injecting a dilute solution of ragweed to a patient who is allergic to ragweed. “This is a homeopathic approach,” said Dr. Kondrot. “In homeopathy, we look at the characteristic symptoms of the patient, such as burning and itching. What makes it better and what makes it worse? Sometimes cold weather makes it better, other times cold weather will make it worse. These characteristic symptoms lead us to a specific remedy.”

Homeopathy as first-line therapy

Dr. Kondrot nearly always uses homeopathic eye drops as first-line options for ocular allergies. “In most cases, if you select the right homeopathic remedy or a combination of remedies, it is not necessary to use more traditional therapies,” he said. “Homeopathic remedies are very successful. They improve both symptoms and signs.”

The Desensitization Eye Drop Formula for Allergy from Natural Ophthalmics (Dillon, Colo.) contains four active ingredients: Allium cepa, apis, Euphrasia and sabadilla. “Allium cepa is the onion,” Dr. Kondrot said. “So using the law of similars, if you are in the kitchen and chopping an onion, you will get a lot of watering in your eye. Allium cepa treats the symptom of watering.”

Likewise, an apis is the bumblebee, he said. “When you get stung by a bee, you get a lot of burning. Apis homeopathically treats the symptom of burning,” Dr. Kondrot said. “However, the bee venom is diluted, so there is no physical substance left. We are actually trying to cause a ‘deamplification’ of the symptoms.”

Euphrasia is a European wild plant with medicinal properties to treat redness and irritation of the eye.

“Sabadilla also treats redness, burning and watering, along with other characteristic symptoms, such as sneezing and coughing,” said Dr. Kondrot, who is a medical advisor to Natural Ophthalmics.

The Natural Ophthalmics eye drop is taken four to five times a day, as needed. “This is my first-line treatment,” Dr. Kondrot said. “More than 80% of my patients have relief of symptoms and signs. Typically, if the inciting cause is eliminated, homeopathy will cure the condition. This is the big difference between homeopathy and allopathy. There is also minimal or no side effects with homeopathy, primarily because we are dealing with diluted substances. They are not toxic at all.”

Dr. Kondrot said patients are receptive to homeopathic remedies for ocular allergies, in part because these products are inexpensive. “Many of the commercially available non-homeopathic products are extremely expensive,” he said. “People are also searching for more natural alternatives.”

Assessing the cause of allergy

The underlying cause of the ocular allergy is an important factor in treatment. For instance, any treatment for a strong allergy to smoke “will be difficult, as long as that allergen continues to be in the presence of the patient,” Dr. Kondrot said. “A homeopathic doctor will assess the causative factors, whether it is airborne allergies, food allergies or toxins in the environment. We try to make an effort to eliminate those, along with dietary changes and increasing the amount of water that a patient drinks.”

Environmental allergies, such as ragweed, are probably the most common type of ocular allergies that Dr. Kondrot treats. “I’ve also been treating a lot of allergies to glaucoma drops. This seems to be a large part of my practice now,” said Dr. Kondrot, who earned a doctorate in homeotherapeutics. “I’m helping these patients get off some of their glaucoma drops by using homeopathic preparations and nutritional supplements. I also perform microcurrent stimulation.”

Dr. Kondrot believes that every eye doctor should investigate homeopathy “not as an alternate, but as the first-line approach to treating ocular allergies.”

Working with the body

“Homeopathics, in, general are less harmful to the body. They work with the body instead of against it,” Jeffrey R. Anshel, OD, in private practice in Carlsbad, Calif., told PCON. “Instead of suppressing the immune system, homeopathics actually stimulate it to help the body fight different invaders. Maybe it is because I practice in Southern California, but many of my patients prefer a natural approach or the least invasive antidrug therapy, so I start with homeopathic eye drops.

In fact, I’ve developed some seasonal allergy eye drops myself,” he continued. “These homeopathic drops work pretty well. Both symptoms and signs improve. However, some of the more aggravated or long-standing conditions take longer for there to be an effect. But if you catch something early enough, the homeopathics work very well in general.”

Dr. Anshel most commonly treats seasonal airborne allergies (e.g., hay fever). “The homeopathic eye drops are typically applied as needed,” he said. “I tell my patients to not hesitate to use the drops three, four or even five times a day. It is not like a medication that can cause an adverse reaction. One of my instructors in homeopathic medicine said you do not need to be afraid of these products. A small child could swallow a whole bottle with no damage.”

According to Dr. Anshel, Allergy Eye Relief eye drops from Similasan Corp. (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) is similar to Natural Ophthalmic’s eye drop, although it has been on the market longer. “Both products are effective,” said Dr. Anshel, who serves on the board of Natural Ophthalmics and has been involved in homeopathic medicine since 1979. “One difference, though, is that the Natural Ophthalmic eye drop is available only through doctors, whereas the Similasan eye drop is available over the counter.”

Boiron USA (Newtown Square, Pa.) also offers a line of homeopathic products, including an eye drop. “But this eye drop is more general and not as specific for allergy,” Dr. Anshel said.

Success rate

Dr. Anshel said that between 50% to 75% of his patients can be treated effectively with homeopathic eye drops. His next step is usually the prescription medication Patanol (olopatadine HCl 0.1 %, Alcon). “Nearly everyone has success with either homeopathics or Patanol,” Dr. Anshel said.

Dr. Anshel admitted that the research in homeopathics “is not as scientific as most doctors would prefer. In addition, we don’t really prescribe most of these products, we recommend them. I encourage doctors to offer homeopathics as an option to treat ocular allergies. You should treat the patient on his or her level and with what makes the patient feel comfortable – not only physically comfortable, but psychologically and emotionally comfortable, too.

“For mild symptoms, you don’t want to overkill,” he continued. “Doctors can be somewhat heavy-handed at times. I honestly prefer to let the body heal itself. The body is an incredible healer and it is amazing what happens internally. I like that homeopathics supports the body and encourages the body to heal itself, rather than trying to impose healing onto the body. We also now have more and better products.”

What is homeopathic medicine and how it can treat eye disease

Homeopathy in the Treatment of Eye Disease
Here is the answer to what is homeopathic medicine and its efficacy in treating eye disease. Homeopathy is an empirical system of medicine established by Samuel Hahnemann who was born in Dresden, Germany in 1755. The word “homeopathy” is derived from the Greek word homoios (similar) and pathos (suffering or disease). There is an interesting story behind why is   alternative medicine so popular. Samuel Hahnemann was a chemist and physician and was also fluent in six languages. He became dissatisfied with the standard modalities of treating disease, which included bloodletting, use of toxic metals,  and purgatives.

While translating “A Treatise on Materia Medica”, by Dr. William Cullen, he came across a passage describing the use of cinchona bark in the treatment of malaria.  Cullen stated that cinchona was a valuable drug because of its astringent qualities. He decided to take the cinchona and observe in detail his own symptoms. To his surprise he developed a symptom complex very similar to the malaria.

This supported the law of healing described by Hypocrites called the “Law of Similars”.  Drugs which produce symptoms in a healthy person will treat those symptoms in a disease state. Hahnemann then proceeded to test or “prove” many other compounds including Aconite, Belladonna and Calcarea carbonica. The symptoms were carefully recorded and were published in the “Materia Medica Pura” and “Chronic Diseases.”

Hahnemann, using his skills of critical observation, developed this system of homeopathy over many years.  Additional provings based on experiments lead to a system of healing.  Other provings were conducted, and these provings became the basis for inclusion in the “Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia.”  The current (ninth) edition describes how more than a thousand substances are prepared for homeopathic use.

These provings became the foundation for homeopathic prescribing.  Hahnemann further developed this system of Homeopathy over a course of many years and performed many additional provings.  Hahnemann’s very critical observation transformed itself into a system of healing based on the following laws:

The Law of Similars
The symptoms of the patient must be matched to the proving symptoms of the remedy for the drug to act homeopathically. This is the basic and most important law in homeopathy. In selecting a remedy not only the physical particular symptoms of the disease but also mental, emotional and general symptoms must match the remedy.

The physical particulars need to be defined as accurately as possible including precise location, extension (symptoms that extend into other parts of the body), and modalities (circumstances that will cause an aggravation or amelioration of the symptoms.  In addition, concomitants are also important. They are unrelated symptoms that may not be explained by the commonly understood pathophysiological process of the disease. An example of a concomitant would be a headache, which occurs during diarrhea.

Single remedy
Homeopathic remedies that are used have been tested by provings of a single remedy. Combination remedies are untested and their proving symptoms are not known. It is impossible to then match symptoms of the patient with these theoretical combinations. Hahnemann in his writings emphasized the importance of only using one remedy at a time.

He felt that the combination of remedies was dangerous, and this combination would produce a different set of symptoms that may not match those of the person.  It is important to understand the action of one remedy and the response of the person to that remedy. If a person has a positive response or negative response when using combination remedies, it would not be known what remedy was responsible for the action. This would interfere with future treatment when repetition or changing of the dose is required.

Single dose
One dose will stimulate the body and create a change. It is important to let this action continue and not be disturbed by repeating the remedy. If the remedy is repeated too soon its action will interfere with the action of the first dose, resulting in an aggravation or a neutralization of its action.

Minimum dose
This is another one of the basic tenets of homeopathy. The lowest possible dose should be used to stimulate the natural healing action of the body.  The homeopathic remedy is similar to an enzyme or a hormone in its action.  A small amount is all that is needed to effect a change. Hahnemann taught, that additional doses of medicine would cease to be therapeutic.

The Law of dilution and succussion
Hahnemann was concerned about the side effects of many of the medications that were commonly used. Through a serious of carefully controlled experiments, Hahnemann discovered that medications could be diluted and still maintain medicinal properties. It was also noted that the dilute medications produced fewer side effects.
Hahnemann also discovered that by succussing (striking or shaking the medicated solution), an apparent activation of the substance developed which increased its healing power.

The more the medication is diluted and succussed, the stronger are the medicinal effects. There have been several experiments conducted in water physics to demonstrate that water crystals develop which can act much like an enzyme substrate reaction to transfer the characteristics of the material substance. Homeopathic remedies are commonly prescribed in the decimal potency 3X to 30X (Diluted ten fold) and centessimal potency (6C to 200C) (Diluted one hundred fold)

Laws of Cure

The homeopath, Constantine Herring, observed this phenomena.  It is not enough to rid the body of symptoms of disease, but the goal is cure. Disease moves in a specific direction during cure. It moves from vital organs to less vital organs, from within to outside, from above to below, and in the reverse order of appearance.

History of Homeopathy and Ophthalmology
There is a very strong history of homeopathy used in Ophthalmology. The  New York Ophthalmic Hospital was under homeopathic management from 1852 to 1867. In 1931 over 31,000 patients were treated at this institution.  College of the New York Ophthalmic Hospital (1879-1939) offered  postgraduate courses in Homeopathic Ophthalmology. The American Homeopathic Ophthalmology and Otology Society  was founded in 1877 and the Homeopathic Eye, Ear and Throat Journal was published from 1895 to 1905)

Let’s now review two diseases, cataracts and macular degeneration, and the role of homeopathy in the treatment.

Cataracts
A. B. Norton published a retrospective Study looking at the homeopathic treatment of cataracts in 295 Patients. 100 Patients were under treatment for longer then 3 months. Results: Improvement in 58% of cases, no change in 42%, Slight decrease in 26%, Significant decrease 19%.

The best indication of success is the level of vision before treatment.  Dr. Norton looked at two groups. Vision better than 15/50 the results were as follows: decided increase in 14%, slight increase in 26%, no increase in 60%. Vision worse than 15/50 the results were as follows: decided increase in 29%, slight increase in 26%, no increase in 45%. So the earlier you treat the cataract the better the results.

In regards to specific remedies, the following 3 remedies where used in 78% of all cases:

Causticum was used in 64/100 cases. Keynote symptoms are feeling of sand in the eye, sensation of pressure, heaviness of the eyelids. There is also burning and itching, desire to keep eyes closed, photophobia and flashes of light.

Calcaria phosphoricum was used in 15/100 cases. Symptoms are headaches especially of the right side and pain around the right eye. There is a tired feeling and stiffness around the eyes.

Sepia was used in 9/100 cases. Symptoms are a weak feeling in the eyes that are worse towards evening.  Symptoms are better middle of the day. There are sharp pains in the eyes, heaviness of the lids and twitching of the lids. There is a strange symptom of smarting of the eyes relieved by eating.

Macular degeneration

Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) affects 13 million Americans. Most of them are over the age of 65, but certain hereditary conditions may cause it to develop in younger individuals. Persons over the age of 75 have a 30% chance of developing ARMD; it rarely affects anyone younger than 55 years old. The homeopathic treatment of macular degeneration is a unique opportunity since there is no effective conventional treatment.   My experiences using homeopathy in the treatment of this disorder were published in the New England Journal of Homeopathy, “Homeopathic approach in the treatment of macular degeneration”

Tissue salts
Tissue salts can also be useful in the treatment of macular degeneration. The follow salts have found to be helpful in the treatment of ARMD.

  • Calcaria fluorica 8X this is often called the tissue strengthener
  • Calcaria phosphorica  6X  is referred to as the cell builder.
  • Kalium  phosphorica 6X  is called the nerve nutrient
  • Natrum muriaticum 6X  is the fluid distributor helping with dryness or excessive moisture in any parts of the body. It can be helpful in cases of wet macular degeneration.

Carboneum sulphuratum
Carboneum Sulphuratum is a homeopathic remedy used to treat ARMD when there are symptoms of a central scotoma worse looking at red or green objects. 30C everyday has been shown to resolve drusen and pigmentary changes.

Secale
Secale is another remedy to consider in the treatment of macular degeneration. Secale is used in low potency in chilly patients with circulatory problems and hemorrhagic tendencies.

Senecula
Senecula  can be used in cases of macular degeneration with the symptom of wavy vision.

Dry Eyes
Here are some common homeopathic remedies for dry eyes.  Suggested dosage is a 6 or 12C twice a day. As with all homeopathic remedies you should stop the medication when symptoms improve.

ACONTINUM NAPELLUS (Acon.)
Symptoms from an exposure to a cold dry wind. Dryness, burning, sensitiveness to air.  Burning in the eyes especially worse in the evening.

ARSENICUM ALBUM (Ars-a)
Burning of the margins of the lid. Feeling of sand in the eyes in the evening. Pulsating and throbbing eye pain after midnight. Light sensitivity.

BELLADONNA (Bell.) Feeling of heat in the eyes. Feeling as if the eyes are protruded.  Severe throbbing pain in the eye and head, worse at night.

EUPRHASIA (Euphr.) Eyes irritated, burning with acrid and profuse tearing. Light sensitivity with intense blinking.

PULSATILLA (Puls.) Eyelids are stuck together by yellow discharge in the morning. Symptoms better in the cool  open air.

MERCURIUS (Merc.) Redness of eyes with thin and acrid tearing which is worse at night. Marked light sensitivity. Symptoms similar to Euphrasia , but they are more marked and there is night time aggravation.

SULPHUR (Sulph.) Watering in the morning followed by dryness. Redness of the eyes during the day. Redness and burning of the eyelids.

ZINC- Eyelids stick together in the morning. Eyes are painful in the evening  with a sensation of sand in the eyes with frequent watering. Constant burning in the eyes with a feeling of dryness. Hot scalding tears.

A formulated  homeopathic  product for dry eyes is  Similasan Eye Drops #1. The dosage is one to two drops every hour as needed.

Computer Eye Strain
Here are some common Homeopathic remedies for eye strain:

RUTA GRAVEOLENS: Ailments from straining especially from fine work . Symptoms are worse during exertion of vision. There can be a feeling stiffness in the eye muscles.

NATRIUM MURIATICUM: There is a bruised and stiff sensation, which is worse while reading and exerting the vision.  It is difficult to read and the letters can run together.

PHYSOSTIGMA: There is twitching of the muscles around the eye. There can also be difficulty focusing and irritability after using eyes. The pupils can sometimes appear very small from eyestrain.

ONOSMODIUM: There is a strained and tired feeling in eye muscles. There can also be a tense drawing pain over the eyes. This pain tends to be worse over the over left eye. Distances are difficult to judge.

Lifestyle Changes and a List of Homeopathic Remedies that can Keep Glaucoma Symptoms at Bay

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a poorly understood disease. Early glaucoma symptoms are not always immediately detected. In someone with Glaucoma, the optic nerve of the eye begins to lose its function. The optic nerve is the transmitter of visual images from the eye to the brain. In the early stages damage of the nerve results in loss of peripheral vision; in later stages blindness may result.  Abnormality in the circulation of the optic nerve appears to be the reason for damage to the optic nerve. Elevated intraocular pressure is felt to be the main contributing factor, although there are patients with glaucoma who have low or normal intraocular pressure. Other factors, which make the nerve more susceptible to damage, are arteriosclerosis and diabetes mellitus. The good news is that many lifestyle changes can help improve blood circulation in the eyes, preventing glaucoma symptoms. Given below are effective treatment tips, followed by a list of homeopathic remedies to treat glaucoma.

What other treatments are available?

Diet
You should shift your diet away from meats and dairy products towards a largely vegetarian diet that includes cold water fish and eggs. There is evidence that this type of diet will help in weight reduction, reduce the risk of arteriosclerotic vascular disease, lower blood pressure, reduce the incidence of diabetes and improve blood flow to the eye.

Exercise
Aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce mean intraocular pressure by 4.6 mm Hg when compared to previously sedentary glaucoma patients. This has the same result as the pressure lowering properties of glaucoma medication.

If you do not have a regular exercise program now is the time to start. You should begin slowly under your physician’s supervision. Begin with 10 to 15 minute several times a week. This should gradually be increased to 30 minutes of moderate exercise everyday. The ideal exercise will increase your heart rate a small amount without producing undue fatigue.

Moderate exercise improves your cardiovascular system, helps keep off extra pounds, lowers cholesterol, reduces high blood pressure and improves retinal circulation.  Exercise also helps to improve your mental outlook and reduces stress. These factors are important in helping the body fight disease. This is probably the best thing you will do for your health!

Coffee
Coffee should be reduced or eliminated. Studies have shown that coffee can produce a 13% reduction in retinal blood flow. This is especially important in patients that have existing retinal damage and who are losing vision.

Smoking
If you smoke please do everything possible to stop. Some studies show that there is a 2.9 increase in risk in developing glaucoma in smokers. While smoking, each cigarette can raise the intraocular pressure by 5.0-mm Hg or more. Nicotine has been shown to reduce retinal blood flow by 16%. Tobacco also robs the body of 25 mg of vitamin C per cigarette. Smokers have an increase in lipids (both fat and cholesterol) which increase the risk of severe cardiovascular disease.  These factors produce narrowing of the retina blood vessels that carry valuable nutrients to the eye.

Sunlight
UV and Blue Violet sunrays increase the risk of developing free radicals.  A good pair of sunglasses which block 100% of UVA and UVB and block at least 85% of blue violet sun rays.

Hypothyroidism
If you have glaucoma it is important to have your thyroid checked. Many cases of low-tension glaucoma have been reported related to low thyroid functioning. Hypothyroidism can lead to a condition called myxedema, which results in a buildup of mucopolysaccharides throughout the body. Increase in mucopolysaccharides in the eye may block the outflow of aqueous producing elevations of intraocular pressure.

Reducing levels of Mucopolysaccharides
Proper thyroid functioning is important to prevent increase levels of mucopolysaccharides. A high fiber diet, vitamins A and C have also been shown to reduce these levels.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants may help improve outflow of fluid in the eye and lower the intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork is the drain of the eye. There have been some studies, which have shown that when the antioxidants are blocked the intraocular pressure will be increased.

Antioxidants may also protect the optic nerve by blocking oxygen free radical vasoconstriction, which may lead to ischemia. Antioxidants may also protect the optic nerve from the inflammatory affects of infection and inflammation.

Recommended antioxidant vitamins include Vitamin E, C and Beta-carotene.

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 may have a protective effect on the optic nerve and prevent visual loss in glaucoma. A Japanese study showed that people who took 1500 Meg. had a much lower visual loss. It protects the myelin sheath or covering around the optic nerve.

Magnesium
Magnesium deficiency is associated with systemic hypertension. It may have a role in blocking the affect of calcium, which causes vasoconstriction of blood vessels.  The use of magnesium has been shown to improve retinal circulation in some cases of retinopathy. Physical or emotional stress also causes an increase in the need for magnesium.

Chromium
Studies have shown that Chromium will lower lipid levels in the body and increase the levels of good cholesterol (HDL). Chromium may be especially important in patients taking beta-blockers. Timoptic has been shown to increase the levels of lipids and lower the levels of HDL. All individuals who are taking Timoptic should consider supplemental Chromium.

Coleus Forskohlii
It is an extract from the Coleus, a variety of the mint plant. It has been used by Hindu practitioners for the treatment of cardiac disease, asthma and high blood pressure. It relaxes smooth muscles and produces vasodilatation of blood vessels.  It has been reported is several studies to lower the intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. Forskohlii was an experiment eye drop found to reduce eye pressure. It was abandoned because the eye drops produced a milky covering over the eye. Taking the herb orally eliminates this side affect.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is scientific method of therapy based on the principle of stimulating the body’s own healing processes in order to accomplish cure. The basic system was devised and verified by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, nearly 200 years ago. Homeopathy’s astounding success rates in both chronic and acute diseases has resulted in not only standing the test of time, but also rapidly achieving widespread acceptance in Europe, India and South America.

In Homeopathy (“homeo-” means “similar”), each of us is a total complete individual, no aspect of which can be separated from any other. To be effective, any valid therapy must be based on a deep understanding of and respect for the uniqueness of each individual. In Homeopathy each patient is evaluated as a whole person- mental, emotional and physical. The prescribing remedy is based on the unique patterns found on all three levels. This means that each person is given a remedy that will stimulate his or her particular body to heal. Ten people with glaucoma might each receive a different homeopathic remedy..

Homeopathy has been carefully researched and its effectiveness has been reported in the following well respected national medical journals: Jacobs J, Treatment of Acute Childhood Diarrhea with Homeopathic Medication. Pediatrics 1994; 93:719-7255, Reilly DT , Is Homeopathy a Placebo Response? Lancet 1986; Oct: 881-886 and Kleijnen J, Clinical Trails of Homeopathy. British Medical Journal 1991; 302: 315-323.

Cataract Facts – Causes – Prevention – Treatment and Problems after Cataract Surgery

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Cataracts: What are they?
Cataracts can occur due to a number of reasons. However, they can also be prevented and treated with homeopathy, herbs or surgery. There are barely any problems after cataract surgery as it is one of the most successful treatments to get rid of cataracts. Here is a look at what are cataracts, causes, prevention and treatments along with the answer to the question ‘is alternative medicine safe’

Constantinus Africanus (AD 1018), a monk and an Arabic oculist introduced the term “cataract”. He translated Arabic “suffusion” into Latin “cataracta,” meaning, “something poured underneath something, the waterfall.”  It was felt that the clouding of vision was do to a film falling like water over the eye. Cataracts are not a film but are a clouding, hardness and loss of elasticity, which occur in the human lens. Cataracts are associated with general arteriosclerotic changes, diabetes, sun exposure, trauma and poor nutrition. It is a fact of life that the longer you live the greater your likelihood of developing a cataract. Over 50% of people over the age of 60 will develop cataracts.

Cataracts: What is the cause?

Aging
As a person ages changes in the protein of the lens develop. Oxidative reactions develop which form abnormal disulfide and other covalent linkages. This causes the lens fibers to lose their transparency.

Trauma
Penetrating trauma from injury or ocular surgery usually results in rapidly progressive cataract, with lens fiber swelling, fragmentation, and opacification. Concussive injuries can infrequently cause a rupture of the lens capsule with the development of a cataract or more commonly a contusion cataract forms in the anterior or posterior cortex. These traumatic cataracts may be transitory, or they can remain if the lens fibers are damaged sufficiently.

Radiation
Ionizing radiation has a very high cataract producing affect, and the lens is its most sensitive target within the adult eye. Its damage is dose related and cumulative. The sources of electromagnetic radiation energy most important in damage to the lens are ionizing radiation (x-rays, gamma rays, and neutrons), emission of infrared or ultraviolet rays from various hot bodies, and microwave.

Heavy metal poisoning
Copper, iron and mercury poisoning can lead to the development of cataracts. Copper deposition in Wilson’s disease produces a characteristic sunflower cataract. In this inherited disease there is copper deposition in tissues, especially the liver, causing cirrhosis, and in the basal ganglia of the brain.

Metabolic disorders
Galactosemia and diabetes are two hereditary diseases, which are related to the development of cataracts. Galactosemia is an uncommon hereditary disease of the newborn producing bilateral cataracts, mental retardation and enlargement of the liver. In diabetes mellitus, the usual cataract in these patients does not differ from senile cataract but occurs 20 to 30 years earlier than in a non-diabetic.

Vitamin and mineral deficiency
Oxidative damage contributes to the decrease natural antioxidants in the lens, such as glutathione,  inositol, and ascorbic acid. Aging, diet, and other disease also play roles in deficiency of antioxidants.

Can cataracts be prevented?

Sunlight
UV and Blue Violet sunrays increase the risk of developing cataracts. There are over 951 different references to back up the claim that sun light is the primary cause of cataracts. . Studies have shown that people who spend a great deal of time outdoors are three times as likely to develop cataracts. A good pair of sunglasses which block 100% of UVA and UVB and block at least 85% of blue violet sun rays are essential to protect the eyes from the harmful effects of the sun. On sunny days a wide brim hat should also be worn.

Smoking
If you smoke please do everything possible to stop. Smoking tobacco, especially more than 20 cigarettes per day, increases the risk of cataracts by more than 2 times. The risk in ex-smokers is 50 percent higher compared to non-smokers. Each cigarette also robs the body of 25 mg of vitamin C. Smokers have an increase in lipids (both fat and cholesterol) which increase the risk of severe cardiovascular disease. These factors produce narrowing of the retina blood vessels that carry valuable nutrients to the eye.

Alcoholic Consumption
High intake of alcohol can more than doubles the risk of developing cataracts. More than 7 drinks per week will increase the risk, while moderate use does not seem to increase the risk.

Sugar and Cataracts
Diabetics develop cataracts at an earlier age than non- diabetics do. An accumulation of sorbitol and fructose in the lens can induce osmotic swelling of the lens, which will lead to the development of a cataract. A significant number of adults who develop cataracts have undiagnosed diabetes. If you have diabetes, every effort should be made to keep your blood sugar under control. There have been several studies to show that vitamin C can help reduce the level of sorbitol and reduce the incidence of cataract formation.

Vitamins and Nutrients
There have been many large-scale studies to show the effectiveness of vitamins on reducing the incidence of cataracts. A Canadian studied showed that patients over the age of 55 who consumed vitamin C and E supplements reduced their risk of developing cataracts by over 50%. A double blind study involving 30,000 patients performed at the University of Helsinki also demonstrated the beneficial effects of vitamins.

Glutathione
Loss of glutathione occurs in all forms of cataracts. Since 1912, researches have shown that reduced levels of glutathione precede the development of cataracts. With increasing age the levels of glutathione content of the human lens decreases by 4 to 14 times. Glutathione supplements are available but it is questioned weather this large molecule can pass through the digestive tract. N-acetyl-cysteine, a stable amino acid, has been shown to raise the levels of glutathione. Cysteine is found in protein rich eggs. Completely avoiding eggs may rob the body of this amino acid, which may have anti cataract properties.

Vitamin C
The lens of the human eye is bathed in a vitamin C rich aqueous solution, which is 30 times more concentrated than the human blood. It appears that this vitamin C acts as an ultraviolet filter preventing the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. With age the levels of vitamin C begin to decrease and this may contribute to the formation of the senile cataract. There are several studies, which have shown that high dosages of vitamin C (1000 mg/ day) will reverse the development of some cataracts.

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
Riboflavin helps to make a substance called flavine adenine dinuceotide, which is necessary for the production of glutathione. High levels of glutathione have been shown to keep the human lens clear and prevent the development of cataracts. In one study, 81 percent of patients with cataracts were deficient in riboflavin.

Other Herbal Treatment – Is alternative medicine safe?

Cineraria maritima (Dusty Miller)

The government of India’s Central Council for Research in Homeopathy, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stated that tincture of Cineraria Maritima Succus is the drug of choice, which prevents the development of cataract. The recommended therapy is 1 to 2 drops in the eye, 3 to 6 times daily.

Boericke describes that it is most effective in traumatic cases and should be instilled into the eye one drop four or five times a day for several. Clarke states that patients should be receiving specific homeopathic treatment internally at the same time.

Homeopathy and Cataracts
Homeopathy is scientific method of therapy based on the principle of stimulating the body’s own healing processes in order to accomplish cure. The basic system was devised and verified by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, nearly 200 years ago. Homeopathy’s astounding success rates in both chronic and acute diseases has resulted in not only standing the test of time, but also rapidly achieving widespread acceptance in Europe, India and South America.

In Homeopathy (“homeo-” means “similar”), each of us is a total and complete individual, no aspect of which can be separated from any other. Ten people with Cataracts might receive ten different homeopathic remedies.

Is homeopathy effective in the treatment of cataracts?  A. B. Norton, MD reviewed his experience on this subject, which was published in North American Journal of Homeopathy.  The Homeopathic Treatment of Incipient Senile Cataract, with Tabulated Results of One Hundred Cases was a convincing study to prove the validity of homeopathy.  This study looked at the homeopathic treatment of cataracts in 295 Patients. 100 Patients were under treatment for longer then 3 months. Results: Improvement in 58% of cases, no change in 42%, Slight decrease in 26%, Significant decreases in 19%.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the most success surgical procedures performed. It is now performed with minimal or no anesthesia and most patients have immediate recovery with no limitations in their activity. It should be considered in advanced cataracts with visual limitation if homeopathic and other non-invasive methods are not successful.

Alternative Complementary Medicine Statistics and Homeopathy for Eyes

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Alternative complementary medicine statistics with homeopathy can be used as a compliment to conventional treatment for eyes.

Not Herbal Therapy, Not Vitamin Therapy. Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on the principal of “like cures
like”.

Homeos meaning “similar”
Pathos meaning “suffering”

Homeopathy is effective. When the correct remedy is taken, results can be complete and permanent. Homeopathy is completely safe. Even babies and pregnant women can use homeopathy without the danger of side effects, interactions with prescription drugs, herbs or vitamins. For allopathic medication, often homeopathy makes weaning off allopathic medicines possible.

  2. What is Homeopathy? Not Herbal Therapy Not Vitamin Therapy Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on the principal of “like cures like”. Homeos meaning “similar” Pathos meaning “suffering” www.healingtheeye.com
  3. What is Homeopathy? Not a new idea: Dates back to Hippocrates, 460-370 BC, who said: “Through the like, disease is produced, and through the application of the like it is cured.”
  4. History of Homeopathy It was not until the end of the 18th century that a brilliant German doctor and chemist, Samuel Hahnemann, started experimentation which led to the system of medicine we now know as Homeopathy. 1755-1843
  5. History of Homeopathy Disillusioned by the savage medical practices of the day, Hahnemann had retired to a life of translating medical texts. 1755-1843
  6. History of Homeopathy While translating these medical texts, he noticed that the substance Peruvian Bark or Cinchona, was listed as causing symptoms, such as numbness of extremities, anxiety, intermittent fevers, similar to symptoms of Malaria, which it was then used to cure.
  7. History of Homeopathy Hahnemann based this new system of medicine on certain laws and principles: •Law of Similars •Law of Proving •Law of Potentization •Law of the Single Remedy
  8. The Law of Similars “Any substance which produces specific toxic symptoms in a healthy person, when given in it’s full strength form, will cure a sick person with those same symptoms in a very diluted form.” -Hahnemann
  9. The Law of Similars Cold or allergy symptoms such as watery eyes and burning nasal discharge can be treated with the homeopathic remedy, Allium Cepa, made from the common red onion.
  10. The Law of Similars The substance Ipecac, known for inducing vomiting in the case of accidental poisonings, can be used homeopathically to alleviate the symptom of incessant nausea or vomiting. For example as in the case of someone with the flu or morning sickness.
  11. The Law of Similars Likewise, angry red swellings, however caused, may be treated with homeopathically prepared Apis, which is made from the honeybee.
  12. The Law of Proving How Homeopathic remedies are discovered: The knowledge of homeopathic remedies is based on scientific experiments called “provings”.
  13. The Law of Proving In a proving, healthy volunteers are given homeopathically prepared doses of a substance until they began to “prove” the remedy, or experience symptoms — mental, emotional as well as physical.
  14. The Law of Proving This information is carefully recorded and repeated many times. The information from provings make up our Homeopathic Materia Medica, which is a description of symptoms caused by each remedy and therefore the symptoms it can be used to alleviate.
  15. The Law of Proving These same symptoms are also recorded in texts known as a Repertory, which is an index of symptoms that lists all remedies known to have that symptom.
  16. The Law of Potentization How homeopathic remedies are made: In his experiments on himself and others, Hahnemann found that even in small amounts the substances were still capable of producing side effects. Hahnemann found that by diluting further, the side effects disappeared.
  17. The Law of Potentization He also established that if the substances were shaken vigorously during the dilution, a practice known as “succussion”, this released a previously dormant energy, making the remedy more potent than before.
  18. The Law of Potentization Each remedy was diluted to such an extent that no actual material of the original substance was left. Hahnemann believed that what existed after this dilution and “succussion” was the transference of the energy of the original material into a new, neutral material.
  19. The Law of Potentization Dilution Potency 1:100 1C 1:1000 2C 1:1000 3C 1: 100000 4C 1:10(200) 200C The potency of the remedy is designated by the amount of dilution. The more a remedy is diluted and shaken, the more “potentized” it becomes.
  20. Potencies The most common strengths are 3, 6, 30, 200, 1000, 10,000, 50,000, and 100,000. Decimal scale: The ratio is 1:10 and is designated by X after the number. Centesimal scale: The ratio is 1:100 and is designated by C after the number.
  21. Potencies Remedies today are made according these homeopathic pharmacological principles, and in accordance with the United States Food and Drug Administration. www.healingtheeye.com
  22. Potencies The remedies are made from natural Substances — plant, animal and mineral. They are considered to be very safe, available over-the-counter and completely non-toxic.
  23. Potencies Each homeopathic remedy bears a National Drug Code number, ensuring the consumer that the product has been made in accordance with The Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States.
  24. Placebo Effect? Because homeopathic remedies are in such minute doses, physicians and scientists frequently assert that they cannot work. An increasing number of controlled studies are proving them wrong.
  25. Placebo Effect? There are many scientific studies on homeopathic medicine indicating its effectiveness. There are studies published in respected scientific journals such as The Lancet and The British Medical Journal.
  26. Lancet Study The Lancet published the most significant and comprehensive review of homeopathic research, which appeared in its September 20, 1997 issue. This article was a meta-analysis of 89 double-blinded, randomized, placebo- controlled clinical trials. The authors conclude that the clinical effects of homeopathic medicines are not simply the results of placebo.
  27. Lancet Study (cont’d) The researchers uncovered 186 studies, 119 of which were double-blind and/or randomized placebo-control trials, and 89 of which met pre- defined criteria for inclusion into a pooled meta- analysis. The researchers found that by pooling the 89 trials together that homeopathic medicines had a 2.45 times greater effect than placebo. — Dana Ullman, M.P.H.
  28. Current Research Breakthrough discoveries in quantum physics show: Water retains memory when substances are diluted and shaken. Instead of molecules separating, some actually combine. (Lo, SY, 1996, 1998)
  29. Law of the Single Remedy Individualization: Classical Homeopathy is based on the principal of the single remedy. That is, no matter how many symptoms are experienced, only one remedy is taken, and that remedy is aimed at all those symptoms.
  30. Law of the Single Remedy Individualization: In this way, Homeopathy is truly holistic, treating the whole person — mentally, emotionally as well as physically. www.healingtheeye.com
  31. The Vital Force The concept of life force energy or vitality is an important one in Homeopathy. Hahnemann named this energy the “Vital Force” similar to the concept of Chi meaning life force in Eastern Medicine or Prana meaning vital energy in Ayurveda or Yoga .
  32. The Vital Force He maintained that this “Vital Force” constantly seeks to maintain balance. Symptoms, no matter how uncomfortable, are always the body attempting to restore itself to health. www.healingtheeye.com
  33. The Vital Force For example, we can observe it in action with an illness such as a fever or a cough. The fever is the body’s defense mechanism used to burn up the infection and the cough is there to prevent accumulation of mucus in the lungs.
  34. Susceptibility The issue of how vulnerable different people are to disease and ill health is an interesting one. Some people have amazingly robust constitutions, rarely succumbing to illness, regardless of their lifestyle.
  35. Susceptibility Others are susceptible to every illness imaginable, even if they exercise daily eat a balanced diet.
  36. Susceptibility Genetic inheritance is an important factor in the strength of constitution. Illnesses and weaknesses that run in families are often passed down through generations.
  37. Susceptibility Many people have health patterns, such as a tendency to asthma or eczema or one area that is always affected during stressful times such as headaches or digestive upset. Homeopathy can help strengthen the weak areas in ones constitution and change one’s pattern of susceptibility, thereby not only acting curatively, but as a prevention of disease.
  38. Hering’s Law of Cure • Healing progresses from within, out. From the deepest level (mental and emotional) to external (skin and extremities). • Healing progresses in reverse order of the original appearance. • Healing progresses from above down. From upper parts to lower parts.
  39. Conventional Medicine Allopathy: “Allo\” meaning other, gives substances that cause symptoms different than what they are experiencing. Conventional medicine seeks to eliminate symptoms and manage the illness, taking each symptom as a separate part of the system to be eliminated.
  40. Conventional Medicine Allopathy: A patient with recurring cystitis, eczema, and depression would be treated in parts — antibiotics, cortisone, and antidepressant medication to control the symptoms — doing nothing to address the underlying disorder.
  41. Conventional Medicine Inherent problems: · If the disease cannot be diagnosed there can be no treatment. All tests indicate you are in perfect health, yet you feel terrible. Many patients have symptoms years before the disease can be diagnosed. May be told to use one drug or another for symptomatic relief until a definitive diagnosis can be made.
  42. Conventional Medicine Inherent problems: · For many diagnosable problems, no treatment exists. For example in the case of Viral disease, antibiotics are useless.
  43. Conventional Medicine Inherent problems: · Treatment for recurrent problems does little to prevent future incidents. Health problems occur due to susceptibility of the patient. The conventional approach rarely addresses susceptibility. Each recurrence is like a revolving door experience.
  44. Conventional Medicine Inherent problems: · Drug side effects · Adverse reactions · Bacterial resistance to antibiotics due to their overuse
  45. Conventional Medicine Inherent problems: · High cost of health care. A few benefit, but most are merely undergoing increasingly expensive evaluations only to find out they have a disease where no satisfactory treatment exists.
  46. Conventional Medicine Indications: · Urgent problems that require immediate control of the disease for the preservation of life or limb. · Life threatening infectious diseases, such as bacterial spinal meningitis, myocardial infarction, hypertensive crisis.
  47. Conventional Medicine Indications: · Surgical Care: hit by a truck or appendicitis. Homeopathy can be started while waiting, some resolving without surgery. Overuse of surgery: •Children getting tubes placed in the ears •Gynecological problems.
  48. Complementary Medicine Homeopathy can also be used as a compliment to conventional treatment. For example in the case of severe asthma, it would not be safe to abruptly stop an allopathic medication. Often homeopathy makes weaning off allopathic medicines possible.
  49. Advantages of Homeopathy · Homeopathy is effective. When the correct remedy is taken, results can be complete and permanent. · Homeopathy is completely safe. Even babies and pregnant women can use homeopathy without the danger of side effects, interactions with prescription drugs, herbs or vitamins.
  50. Advantages of Homeopathy · Homeopathy is natural. Homeopathic remedies are normally based on natural ingredients. · Homeopathy works in harmony with your immune system. Unlike some conventional medicines which suppress the immune system. For example, cough medicines suppress the cough reflex, which is your body’s attempt to clear the lungs.
  51. Advantages of Homeopathy · Homeopathic remedies are not addictive. Once relief is felt, you should stop taking them. If no relief is felt, you are probably taking the wrong remedy. · Homeopathy is holistic — it treats all the symptoms as one picture. In practical terms, means that it addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms. This often means that symptoms alleviated by homeopathy do not recur.

Complimentary Medicine Helps Reduce The Need for Reading Glasses

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

reading-glassesMany people with excellent eye sight discover their vision beginning to fail in their 40’s and 50’s. It is a shock to discover that small print is impossible to read, there is never enough light and your arms are never long enough! This is where the troublesome dependency on reading glasses begins! Can you turn back the clock or at least slow the ticking? What can be done? Vision therapy

The first step is good nutrition. Colorful foods will help give us colorful vision and reduce eye strain. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables which have bright colors. These are rich in antioxidants and bioflavonoids which are essential for healthy vision. Avoid foods that are toxic to your body and of course avoid alcohol and, if you have the unfortunate habit, do everything possible to stop smoking.

The second step is exercise. Dr. William Bates, a famous vision therapist, discovered that all eye disease is caused by stress around the eye. He believed that by reducing this stress dependency on glasses could be reduced or even eliminated. He developed several eye exercises to reduce stress and improve vision. For more information on the Bate’s exercises read chapter three in Healing the Eye the Natural Way.

Step three: heal your eyes from within with homeopathy. Homeopathy is a system of medicine which stimulates the body to heal itself. There are several homeopathic remedies that are useful for reducing eye strain and improving vision. One of these is Ruta which can help reduce eye strain and relieve the headaches from over worked eyes.

And finally, Step four: science to the rescue! There is a new procedure to “turn back the clock” and give you back your young reading eyes. The procedure is called Conductive Keratoplasty or CK. It is a recently approved FDA procedure. It uses no laser and no cutting is involved. How does it work? Radio frequency waves are delivered to the outer part of the eye. These waves reshape the cornea to improve reading vision. Over 14,000 procedures have been performed with an extremely high success rate. If you are over the age of 40, have had good vision all your life and now need reading glasses (and you hate them) this procedure may be just what you are looking for!

Attend a Healing the Eye and Wellness Seminar to begin to restore your eyesight and clarity of vision. These one and three day seminars focus on nutrition, homeopathy, stress reduction, meditation, the mind body connection and yoga for your eyes. Nutritional and Homeopathic evaluations along with treatments such as massage, acupuncture, microcurrent stimulation and chelation therapy will be available during the three day seminar.

Treatment of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion through Homeopathy

Monday, February 16th, 2009

blindness-curesA 57 year old radiologist presented with a 2 day history of a sudden onset of blindness of the left eye. He was previously examined and was given the diagnosis of “Central Artery Occlusion” He presents with the hope that homeopathy might improve his vision. He is very loquacious with pressured speech. While shaving he noticed a painless black out of vision of the left eye.

One week ago while on a cruise to Alaska he noticed that he vision was not as sharp. He gets mad very easily and he can’t stand rudeness. He initially thought resting would help his vision- he also has the peculiar symptom that the vision is better in a dark room and worse in the light. His medical history is positive for a 5 year history of insulin dependent diabetes.

Physical exam reveals a vision of 20/40 in the right eye and bare light perception in the left eye. There is no afferent pupillary light defect and the left pupil is slightly larger. Intraocular tensions are normal. Bothrops 12C BID was prescribed. “This remedy, together with Lachesis, Arnica, Latrodectus mactans and Lycopodium should be our main remedies for coping with the first hours following heart infracts and brain thrombosis. Amaurosis is a strong symptom; day blindness so can scarcely see her way after sunrise” Vithoulkas. The patient had complete return of vision in 3 days and is doing well 2 years later.
