Miracles of Microcurrent and Homeopathy!

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

How my body recovered from the grueling 26.2 Marine Corps Marathon. On Sunday Oct 31st, I finished the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC along with my wife and stepson (Ly and Lawrence)

It has been 20 years since I have run a marathon and at age 60 I should have trained properly before attempting this race. Unfortunately due to my busy schedule I only completed a few 10 mile runs to train for this race. In my prime, over 20 years ago, I would run 60 to 80 mile a week with a few 20 mile runs!

Needless to say when I reached the 20 mile mark I died and after finishing the race my body was incredibly sore! Walking- forget it. I was only able to shuffle and I had to slide my body in and out of bed!
Ly and Lawrence were just as sore as me. Ly and I took some Arnica which relieved the pain but the soreness persisted.

Monday night we decided to do a Microcurrent treatment for the muscle soreness. My favorite way of doing this is sit in a hot tub and let the healing current flow through the water.

How does this work? Doesn’t the current short out in the water before reaching your body? Well I use Frequency Specific Microcurrent. The current carries specific frequencies that match body tissues and pathologic conditions. Frequencies specific for inflammation, pain and toxins. The analogy is the tuning fork. If you vibrate 2 identical tuning forks let say 2 C# forks they will vibrate in harmony. Like was with the current. If it vibrates with a tissue it will harmonize and stimulate healing.

To my surprise after a 30 minute treatment both Ly and I were back to normal. I was absolutely stunned! Even 20 years ago with proper training I would be sore for at least a week.

This miracle has reinforced my beliefs on the power of Microcurrent to treat inflammation, acute and chronic disease and eye disease.

Alternative Treatments for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the most common cause of irreversible blindness in people over the age of 65. As age-related-macular-degenerationmany as 1/3 of people over 65 will develop this condition. It is a slow progressive disease that affects the central area of the retina called the macula. This is the location of the retina responsible for central vision, which gives us the greatest detail in our sight.

Laser treatment has been successful in some cases of wet macular degeneration when the hemorrhage is distant to the fovea (central part of the macular)  In many cases, laser treatment will cause a further loss of vision and will destroy healthy retinal tissue. Several alternative therapies which preserve the retina are showing great promise in slowing the progression and in many cases reversing degeneration. These therapies address the underlying problem strengthening and balancing the retinal tissue.

Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)

A new technique called Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) has produced a dramatic improvement in treatment outcomes of macular degeneration using microcurrent stimulation. Instead of using basic generic frequencies which have a low level affect on the diseased eye tissue we now can use frequencies specific to the retinal tissue and the pathology. The energy is driven into the area needed for tissue repair.

The roots of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) date back to the early 1900′s from Dr. Albert Abrams, who was the first physician to use calibrated instruments capable of detecting the radiations of living tissue. Dr. Abrams concluded that all matter radiates electromagnetic energy and the characteristics of the radiation depends upon the unique molecular structure.

Modern FSM utilizes hundreds of frequencies within the range of .01 to 999 Hz with varying intensities of 20 to 600 micro amps. Each tissue in the body has an individualized frequencies for example the retina has a frequency of 95 Hz and  macula 137 Hz. Each type of pathology also has a frequency.  Hemorrhage has a frequency of 18 and edema is 14.

FSM is “frequency specific” because the frequencies of the tissue and that of the pathology are “matched” with two frequencies. For example hemorrhage in the macula the FSM treatment would use 18 Hz and 137 Hz.  This coupled frequencies then matches the exact abnormalities that are present in the damaged tissue. The desired effect is to neutralize those frequencies that are in disharmony.

Color Therapy

Color light of a specific wavelength is directed into the eye which then affects the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system.  Evidence shows that disease is caused by an imbalance in these systems. Restoring this balance can be an important step towards healing.  When the parasympathetic system is suppressed the body has a difficult time to heal disease. Healing will not take place unless there is a balance in the autonomic system. Color therapy can help. The red spectrum has been documented to stimulate the sympathetic system.  No we do not want this since most of our life takes care of this very nicely!  The color red has been associated with anger and increase heart rate and an increase in blood pressure. Blue on the other hand will relax the sympathetic system and stimulate the parasympathetic. Think about how relaxing the blue ocean water and blue sky can be! A vacation to the beach can be very healing.

The 73 year old College of Syntonics has investigated specific color wave lengths and has studied the affects on eye disease. This research is on-going but data indicates that certain frequencies of blue green light can improve the vision in patients with macular degeneration and certain frequencies of green light can lower the pressures in patients with glaucoma. The key is “certain frequencies” each color can have a myriad of frequencies and the task is to identify the best frequency that resonates with the eye  Just like in the use of microcurrent the success of color therapy depends on selecting the proper frequency for the patient.

Homeopathic Allergy Eye Drops Are Effective As One Of The Natural Remedies For Allergies

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Homeopathic allergy eye drops are one of the natural remedies for allergies that treat eye allergies. Homeopathic remedies for treating ocular allergies are safe and effective, according to two clinicians.

“Homeopathic treatment of allergies is the best way to go, because it is not suppressive,” Edward C. Kondrot, MD, CCH, in private practice in Phoenix, said in an interview with PRIMARY CARE OPTOMETRY NEWS referring to homeopathic allergy eye drops. “A lot of the steroidal preparations and other pharmaceutical drops really mask the symptoms.” This is unlike natural remedies for allergies.

According to Dr. Kondrot, homeopathic medicine is based on the law of similars. “A substance that produces symptoms in a healthy person will treat those same symptoms in a diseased state,” he said.

There are many examples of allergy desensitization, such as an allergist injecting a dilute solution of ragweed to a patient who is allergic to ragweed. “This is a homeopathic approach,” said Dr. Kondrot. “In homeopathy, we look at the characteristic symptoms of the patient, such as burning and itching. What makes it better and what makes it worse? Sometimes cold weather makes it better, other times cold weather will make it worse. These characteristic symptoms lead us to a specific remedy.”

Homeopathy as first-line therapy

Dr. Kondrot nearly always uses homeopathic eye drops as first-line options for ocular allergies. “In most cases, if you select the right homeopathic remedy or a combination of remedies, it is not necessary to use more traditional therapies,” he said. “Homeopathic remedies are very successful. They improve both symptoms and signs.”

The Desensitization Eye Drop Formula for Allergy from Natural Ophthalmics (Dillon, Colo.) contains four active ingredients: Allium cepa, apis, Euphrasia and sabadilla. “Allium cepa is the onion,” Dr. Kondrot said. “So using the law of similars, if you are in the kitchen and chopping an onion, you will get a lot of watering in your eye. Allium cepa treats the symptom of watering.”

Likewise, an apis is the bumblebee, he said. “When you get stung by a bee, you get a lot of burning. Apis homeopathically treats the symptom of burning,” Dr. Kondrot said. “However, the bee venom is diluted, so there is no physical substance left. We are actually trying to cause a ‘deamplification’ of the symptoms.”

Euphrasia is a European wild plant with medicinal properties to treat redness and irritation of the eye.

“Sabadilla also treats redness, burning and watering, along with other characteristic symptoms, such as sneezing and coughing,” said Dr. Kondrot, who is a medical advisor to Natural Ophthalmics.

The Natural Ophthalmics eye drop is taken four to five times a day, as needed. “This is my first-line treatment,” Dr. Kondrot said. “More than 80% of my patients have relief of symptoms and signs. Typically, if the inciting cause is eliminated, homeopathy will cure the condition. This is the big difference between homeopathy and allopathy. There is also minimal or no side effects with homeopathy, primarily because we are dealing with diluted substances. They are not toxic at all.”

Dr. Kondrot said patients are receptive to homeopathic remedies for ocular allergies, in part because these products are inexpensive. “Many of the commercially available non-homeopathic products are extremely expensive,” he said. “People are also searching for more natural alternatives.”

Assessing the cause of allergy

The underlying cause of the ocular allergy is an important factor in treatment. For instance, any treatment for a strong allergy to smoke “will be difficult, as long as that allergen continues to be in the presence of the patient,” Dr. Kondrot said. “A homeopathic doctor will assess the causative factors, whether it is airborne allergies, food allergies or toxins in the environment. We try to make an effort to eliminate those, along with dietary changes and increasing the amount of water that a patient drinks.”

Environmental allergies, such as ragweed, are probably the most common type of ocular allergies that Dr. Kondrot treats. “I’ve also been treating a lot of allergies to glaucoma drops. This seems to be a large part of my practice now,” said Dr. Kondrot, who earned a doctorate in homeotherapeutics. “I’m helping these patients get off some of their glaucoma drops by using homeopathic preparations and nutritional supplements. I also perform microcurrent stimulation.”

Dr. Kondrot believes that every eye doctor should investigate homeopathy “not as an alternate, but as the first-line approach to treating ocular allergies.”

Working with the body

“Homeopathics, in, general are less harmful to the body. They work with the body instead of against it,” Jeffrey R. Anshel, OD, in private practice in Carlsbad, Calif., told PCON. “Instead of suppressing the immune system, homeopathics actually stimulate it to help the body fight different invaders. Maybe it is because I practice in Southern California, but many of my patients prefer a natural approach or the least invasive antidrug therapy, so I start with homeopathic eye drops.

In fact, I’ve developed some seasonal allergy eye drops myself,” he continued. “These homeopathic drops work pretty well. Both symptoms and signs improve. However, some of the more aggravated or long-standing conditions take longer for there to be an effect. But if you catch something early enough, the homeopathics work very well in general.”

Dr. Anshel most commonly treats seasonal airborne allergies (e.g., hay fever). “The homeopathic eye drops are typically applied as needed,” he said. “I tell my patients to not hesitate to use the drops three, four or even five times a day. It is not like a medication that can cause an adverse reaction. One of my instructors in homeopathic medicine said you do not need to be afraid of these products. A small child could swallow a whole bottle with no damage.”

According to Dr. Anshel, Allergy Eye Relief eye drops from Similasan Corp. (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) is similar to Natural Ophthalmic’s eye drop, although it has been on the market longer. “Both products are effective,” said Dr. Anshel, who serves on the board of Natural Ophthalmics and has been involved in homeopathic medicine since 1979. “One difference, though, is that the Natural Ophthalmic eye drop is available only through doctors, whereas the Similasan eye drop is available over the counter.”

Boiron USA (Newtown Square, Pa.) also offers a line of homeopathic products, including an eye drop. “But this eye drop is more general and not as specific for allergy,” Dr. Anshel said.

Success rate

Dr. Anshel said that between 50% to 75% of his patients can be treated effectively with homeopathic eye drops. His next step is usually the prescription medication Patanol (olopatadine HCl 0.1 %, Alcon). “Nearly everyone has success with either homeopathics or Patanol,” Dr. Anshel said.

Dr. Anshel admitted that the research in homeopathics “is not as scientific as most doctors would prefer. In addition, we don’t really prescribe most of these products, we recommend them. I encourage doctors to offer homeopathics as an option to treat ocular allergies. You should treat the patient on his or her level and with what makes the patient feel comfortable – not only physically comfortable, but psychologically and emotionally comfortable, too.

“For mild symptoms, you don’t want to overkill,” he continued. “Doctors can be somewhat heavy-handed at times. I honestly prefer to let the body heal itself. The body is an incredible healer and it is amazing what happens internally. I like that homeopathics supports the body and encourages the body to heal itself, rather than trying to impose healing onto the body. We also now have more and better products.”

What is homeopathic medicine and how it can treat eye disease

Homeopathy in the Treatment of Eye Disease
Here is the answer to what is homeopathic medicine and its efficacy in treating eye disease. Homeopathy is an empirical system of medicine established by Samuel Hahnemann who was born in Dresden, Germany in 1755. The word “homeopathy” is derived from the Greek word homoios (similar) and pathos (suffering or disease). There is an interesting story behind why is   alternative medicine so popular. Samuel Hahnemann was a chemist and physician and was also fluent in six languages. He became dissatisfied with the standard modalities of treating disease, which included bloodletting, use of toxic metals,  and purgatives.

While translating “A Treatise on Materia Medica”, by Dr. William Cullen, he came across a passage describing the use of cinchona bark in the treatment of malaria.  Cullen stated that cinchona was a valuable drug because of its astringent qualities. He decided to take the cinchona and observe in detail his own symptoms. To his surprise he developed a symptom complex very similar to the malaria.

This supported the law of healing described by Hypocrites called the “Law of Similars”.  Drugs which produce symptoms in a healthy person will treat those symptoms in a disease state. Hahnemann then proceeded to test or “prove” many other compounds including Aconite, Belladonna and Calcarea carbonica. The symptoms were carefully recorded and were published in the “Materia Medica Pura” and “Chronic Diseases.”

Hahnemann, using his skills of critical observation, developed this system of homeopathy over many years.  Additional provings based on experiments lead to a system of healing.  Other provings were conducted, and these provings became the basis for inclusion in the “Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia.”  The current (ninth) edition describes how more than a thousand substances are prepared for homeopathic use.

These provings became the foundation for homeopathic prescribing.  Hahnemann further developed this system of Homeopathy over a course of many years and performed many additional provings.  Hahnemann’s very critical observation transformed itself into a system of healing based on the following laws:

The Law of Similars
The symptoms of the patient must be matched to the proving symptoms of the remedy for the drug to act homeopathically. This is the basic and most important law in homeopathy. In selecting a remedy not only the physical particular symptoms of the disease but also mental, emotional and general symptoms must match the remedy.

The physical particulars need to be defined as accurately as possible including precise location, extension (symptoms that extend into other parts of the body), and modalities (circumstances that will cause an aggravation or amelioration of the symptoms.  In addition, concomitants are also important. They are unrelated symptoms that may not be explained by the commonly understood pathophysiological process of the disease. An example of a concomitant would be a headache, which occurs during diarrhea.

Single remedy
Homeopathic remedies that are used have been tested by provings of a single remedy. Combination remedies are untested and their proving symptoms are not known. It is impossible to then match symptoms of the patient with these theoretical combinations. Hahnemann in his writings emphasized the importance of only using one remedy at a time.

He felt that the combination of remedies was dangerous, and this combination would produce a different set of symptoms that may not match those of the person.  It is important to understand the action of one remedy and the response of the person to that remedy. If a person has a positive response or negative response when using combination remedies, it would not be known what remedy was responsible for the action. This would interfere with future treatment when repetition or changing of the dose is required.

Single dose
One dose will stimulate the body and create a change. It is important to let this action continue and not be disturbed by repeating the remedy. If the remedy is repeated too soon its action will interfere with the action of the first dose, resulting in an aggravation or a neutralization of its action.

Minimum dose
This is another one of the basic tenets of homeopathy. The lowest possible dose should be used to stimulate the natural healing action of the body.  The homeopathic remedy is similar to an enzyme or a hormone in its action.  A small amount is all that is needed to effect a change. Hahnemann taught, that additional doses of medicine would cease to be therapeutic.

The Law of dilution and succussion
Hahnemann was concerned about the side effects of many of the medications that were commonly used. Through a serious of carefully controlled experiments, Hahnemann discovered that medications could be diluted and still maintain medicinal properties. It was also noted that the dilute medications produced fewer side effects.
Hahnemann also discovered that by succussing (striking or shaking the medicated solution), an apparent activation of the substance developed which increased its healing power.

The more the medication is diluted and succussed, the stronger are the medicinal effects. There have been several experiments conducted in water physics to demonstrate that water crystals develop which can act much like an enzyme substrate reaction to transfer the characteristics of the material substance. Homeopathic remedies are commonly prescribed in the decimal potency 3X to 30X (Diluted ten fold) and centessimal potency (6C to 200C) (Diluted one hundred fold)

Laws of Cure

The homeopath, Constantine Herring, observed this phenomena.  It is not enough to rid the body of symptoms of disease, but the goal is cure. Disease moves in a specific direction during cure. It moves from vital organs to less vital organs, from within to outside, from above to below, and in the reverse order of appearance.

History of Homeopathy and Ophthalmology
There is a very strong history of homeopathy used in Ophthalmology. The  New York Ophthalmic Hospital was under homeopathic management from 1852 to 1867. In 1931 over 31,000 patients were treated at this institution.  College of the New York Ophthalmic Hospital (1879-1939) offered  postgraduate courses in Homeopathic Ophthalmology. The American Homeopathic Ophthalmology and Otology Society  was founded in 1877 and the Homeopathic Eye, Ear and Throat Journal was published from 1895 to 1905)

Let’s now review two diseases, cataracts and macular degeneration, and the role of homeopathy in the treatment.

Cataracts
A. B. Norton published a retrospective Study looking at the homeopathic treatment of cataracts in 295 Patients. 100 Patients were under treatment for longer then 3 months. Results: Improvement in 58% of cases, no change in 42%, Slight decrease in 26%, Significant decrease 19%.

The best indication of success is the level of vision before treatment.  Dr. Norton looked at two groups. Vision better than 15/50 the results were as follows: decided increase in 14%, slight increase in 26%, no increase in 60%. Vision worse than 15/50 the results were as follows: decided increase in 29%, slight increase in 26%, no increase in 45%. So the earlier you treat the cataract the better the results.

In regards to specific remedies, the following 3 remedies where used in 78% of all cases:

Causticum was used in 64/100 cases. Keynote symptoms are feeling of sand in the eye, sensation of pressure, heaviness of the eyelids. There is also burning and itching, desire to keep eyes closed, photophobia and flashes of light.

Calcaria phosphoricum was used in 15/100 cases. Symptoms are headaches especially of the right side and pain around the right eye. There is a tired feeling and stiffness around the eyes.

Sepia was used in 9/100 cases. Symptoms are a weak feeling in the eyes that are worse towards evening.  Symptoms are better middle of the day. There are sharp pains in the eyes, heaviness of the lids and twitching of the lids. There is a strange symptom of smarting of the eyes relieved by eating.

Macular degeneration

Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) affects 13 million Americans. Most of them are over the age of 65, but certain hereditary conditions may cause it to develop in younger individuals. Persons over the age of 75 have a 30% chance of developing ARMD; it rarely affects anyone younger than 55 years old. The homeopathic treatment of macular degeneration is a unique opportunity since there is no effective conventional treatment.   My experiences using homeopathy in the treatment of this disorder were published in the New England Journal of Homeopathy, “Homeopathic approach in the treatment of macular degeneration”

Tissue salts
Tissue salts can also be useful in the treatment of macular degeneration. The follow salts have found to be helpful in the treatment of ARMD.

  • Calcaria fluorica 8X this is often called the tissue strengthener
  • Calcaria phosphorica  6X  is referred to as the cell builder.
  • Kalium  phosphorica 6X  is called the nerve nutrient
  • Natrum muriaticum 6X  is the fluid distributor helping with dryness or excessive moisture in any parts of the body. It can be helpful in cases of wet macular degeneration.

Carboneum sulphuratum
Carboneum Sulphuratum is a homeopathic remedy used to treat ARMD when there are symptoms of a central scotoma worse looking at red or green objects. 30C everyday has been shown to resolve drusen and pigmentary changes.

Secale
Secale is another remedy to consider in the treatment of macular degeneration. Secale is used in low potency in chilly patients with circulatory problems and hemorrhagic tendencies.

Senecula
Senecula  can be used in cases of macular degeneration with the symptom of wavy vision.

Dry Eyes
Here are some common homeopathic remedies for dry eyes.  Suggested dosage is a 6 or 12C twice a day. As with all homeopathic remedies you should stop the medication when symptoms improve.

ACONTINUM NAPELLUS (Acon.)
Symptoms from an exposure to a cold dry wind. Dryness, burning, sensitiveness to air.  Burning in the eyes especially worse in the evening.

ARSENICUM ALBUM (Ars-a)
Burning of the margins of the lid. Feeling of sand in the eyes in the evening. Pulsating and throbbing eye pain after midnight. Light sensitivity.

BELLADONNA (Bell.) Feeling of heat in the eyes. Feeling as if the eyes are protruded.  Severe throbbing pain in the eye and head, worse at night.

EUPRHASIA (Euphr.) Eyes irritated, burning with acrid and profuse tearing. Light sensitivity with intense blinking.

PULSATILLA (Puls.) Eyelids are stuck together by yellow discharge in the morning. Symptoms better in the cool  open air.

MERCURIUS (Merc.) Redness of eyes with thin and acrid tearing which is worse at night. Marked light sensitivity. Symptoms similar to Euphrasia , but they are more marked and there is night time aggravation.

SULPHUR (Sulph.) Watering in the morning followed by dryness. Redness of the eyes during the day. Redness and burning of the eyelids.

ZINC- Eyelids stick together in the morning. Eyes are painful in the evening  with a sensation of sand in the eyes with frequent watering. Constant burning in the eyes with a feeling of dryness. Hot scalding tears.

A formulated  homeopathic  product for dry eyes is  Similasan Eye Drops #1. The dosage is one to two drops every hour as needed.

Computer Eye Strain
Here are some common Homeopathic remedies for eye strain:

RUTA GRAVEOLENS: Ailments from straining especially from fine work . Symptoms are worse during exertion of vision. There can be a feeling stiffness in the eye muscles.

NATRIUM MURIATICUM: There is a bruised and stiff sensation, which is worse while reading and exerting the vision.  It is difficult to read and the letters can run together.

PHYSOSTIGMA: There is twitching of the muscles around the eye. There can also be difficulty focusing and irritability after using eyes. The pupils can sometimes appear very small from eyestrain.

ONOSMODIUM: There is a strained and tired feeling in eye muscles. There can also be a tense drawing pain over the eyes. This pain tends to be worse over the over left eye. Distances are difficult to judge.

Lifestyle Changes and a List of Homeopathic Remedies that can Keep Glaucoma Symptoms at Bay

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a poorly understood disease. Early glaucoma symptoms are not always immediately detected. In someone with Glaucoma, the optic nerve of the eye begins to lose its function. The optic nerve is the transmitter of visual images from the eye to the brain. In the early stages damage of the nerve results in loss of peripheral vision; in later stages blindness may result.  Abnormality in the circulation of the optic nerve appears to be the reason for damage to the optic nerve. Elevated intraocular pressure is felt to be the main contributing factor, although there are patients with glaucoma who have low or normal intraocular pressure. Other factors, which make the nerve more susceptible to damage, are arteriosclerosis and diabetes mellitus. The good news is that many lifestyle changes can help improve blood circulation in the eyes, preventing glaucoma symptoms. Given below are effective treatment tips, followed by a list of homeopathic remedies to treat glaucoma.

What other treatments are available?

Diet
You should shift your diet away from meats and dairy products towards a largely vegetarian diet that includes cold water fish and eggs. There is evidence that this type of diet will help in weight reduction, reduce the risk of arteriosclerotic vascular disease, lower blood pressure, reduce the incidence of diabetes and improve blood flow to the eye.

Exercise
Aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce mean intraocular pressure by 4.6 mm Hg when compared to previously sedentary glaucoma patients. This has the same result as the pressure lowering properties of glaucoma medication.

If you do not have a regular exercise program now is the time to start. You should begin slowly under your physician’s supervision. Begin with 10 to 15 minute several times a week. This should gradually be increased to 30 minutes of moderate exercise everyday. The ideal exercise will increase your heart rate a small amount without producing undue fatigue.

Moderate exercise improves your cardiovascular system, helps keep off extra pounds, lowers cholesterol, reduces high blood pressure and improves retinal circulation.  Exercise also helps to improve your mental outlook and reduces stress. These factors are important in helping the body fight disease. This is probably the best thing you will do for your health!

Coffee
Coffee should be reduced or eliminated. Studies have shown that coffee can produce a 13% reduction in retinal blood flow. This is especially important in patients that have existing retinal damage and who are losing vision.

Smoking
If you smoke please do everything possible to stop. Some studies show that there is a 2.9 increase in risk in developing glaucoma in smokers. While smoking, each cigarette can raise the intraocular pressure by 5.0-mm Hg or more. Nicotine has been shown to reduce retinal blood flow by 16%. Tobacco also robs the body of 25 mg of vitamin C per cigarette. Smokers have an increase in lipids (both fat and cholesterol) which increase the risk of severe cardiovascular disease.  These factors produce narrowing of the retina blood vessels that carry valuable nutrients to the eye.

Sunlight
UV and Blue Violet sunrays increase the risk of developing free radicals.  A good pair of sunglasses which block 100% of UVA and UVB and block at least 85% of blue violet sun rays.

Hypothyroidism
If you have glaucoma it is important to have your thyroid checked. Many cases of low-tension glaucoma have been reported related to low thyroid functioning. Hypothyroidism can lead to a condition called myxedema, which results in a buildup of mucopolysaccharides throughout the body. Increase in mucopolysaccharides in the eye may block the outflow of aqueous producing elevations of intraocular pressure.

Reducing levels of Mucopolysaccharides
Proper thyroid functioning is important to prevent increase levels of mucopolysaccharides. A high fiber diet, vitamins A and C have also been shown to reduce these levels.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants may help improve outflow of fluid in the eye and lower the intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork is the drain of the eye. There have been some studies, which have shown that when the antioxidants are blocked the intraocular pressure will be increased.

Antioxidants may also protect the optic nerve by blocking oxygen free radical vasoconstriction, which may lead to ischemia. Antioxidants may also protect the optic nerve from the inflammatory affects of infection and inflammation.

Recommended antioxidant vitamins include Vitamin E, C and Beta-carotene.

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 may have a protective effect on the optic nerve and prevent visual loss in glaucoma. A Japanese study showed that people who took 1500 Meg. had a much lower visual loss. It protects the myelin sheath or covering around the optic nerve.

Magnesium
Magnesium deficiency is associated with systemic hypertension. It may have a role in blocking the affect of calcium, which causes vasoconstriction of blood vessels.  The use of magnesium has been shown to improve retinal circulation in some cases of retinopathy. Physical or emotional stress also causes an increase in the need for magnesium.

Chromium
Studies have shown that Chromium will lower lipid levels in the body and increase the levels of good cholesterol (HDL). Chromium may be especially important in patients taking beta-blockers. Timoptic has been shown to increase the levels of lipids and lower the levels of HDL. All individuals who are taking Timoptic should consider supplemental Chromium.

Coleus Forskohlii
It is an extract from the Coleus, a variety of the mint plant. It has been used by Hindu practitioners for the treatment of cardiac disease, asthma and high blood pressure. It relaxes smooth muscles and produces vasodilatation of blood vessels.  It has been reported is several studies to lower the intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. Forskohlii was an experiment eye drop found to reduce eye pressure. It was abandoned because the eye drops produced a milky covering over the eye. Taking the herb orally eliminates this side affect.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is scientific method of therapy based on the principle of stimulating the body’s own healing processes in order to accomplish cure. The basic system was devised and verified by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, nearly 200 years ago. Homeopathy’s astounding success rates in both chronic and acute diseases has resulted in not only standing the test of time, but also rapidly achieving widespread acceptance in Europe, India and South America.

In Homeopathy (“homeo-” means “similar”), each of us is a total complete individual, no aspect of which can be separated from any other. To be effective, any valid therapy must be based on a deep understanding of and respect for the uniqueness of each individual. In Homeopathy each patient is evaluated as a whole person- mental, emotional and physical. The prescribing remedy is based on the unique patterns found on all three levels. This means that each person is given a remedy that will stimulate his or her particular body to heal. Ten people with glaucoma might each receive a different homeopathic remedy..

Homeopathy has been carefully researched and its effectiveness has been reported in the following well respected national medical journals: Jacobs J, Treatment of Acute Childhood Diarrhea with Homeopathic Medication. Pediatrics 1994; 93:719-7255, Reilly DT , Is Homeopathy a Placebo Response? Lancet 1986; Oct: 881-886 and Kleijnen J, Clinical Trails of Homeopathy. British Medical Journal 1991; 302: 315-323.

Homeopathy can be a very valuable adjunct in your treatment of Glaucoma.

How does Acupuncture Work in Treating Eye Pressure Problems?

COLORPUNCTURE: Treating eye problems with colored lights and acupuncture

How can colored light treatment help eye problems? How does acupuncture work in the treatment of eye diseases that could be possibly related to kidney disease and liver problems? We are familiar with the Chinese system of medicine called acupuncture. The Chinese have observed that energy or chi travels through the body in specific meridians. These meridians are located near the surface of the skin and are named after organ structures.  Two meridians associated with eye pressure problems are the liver-gallbladder and kidney-bladder meridian. There is a saying in Chinese medicine that the “Eye is the flower of the liver.”  This means that whatever happens energetically in the liver will affect the eye. This does not mean that if you have an eye pressure problem you have a corresponding liver ailment. We are talking about energy- interestingly in the Chinese system of medicine each organ also has an associated emotion. The liver is related to anger and the kidney, fear.  Disease is caused by blockage or excess energy flow in these meridians and to change the energy flow fine needles are inserted into these meridians to change the energy flow.

In the 1970’s the German acupuncturist Dr. Peter Mandel noted that using colored light on acupuncture points or meridians would achieve better results than using convention needles. After years of research Dr. Mandel developed a diagnostic and treatment program based on the use of colored lights called color puncture. I became interested in color puncture in 1991 and have become a certified Colorpuncture therapist along with personally studying with Dr. Mandel in Europe and India.

In order to understand how color puncture works you need to understand that color can either have a warming or energizing effect or it can have a cooling or de-energizing effect. Colors toward the red spectrum have a warming or energizing effect and those towards the blue spectrum have a cooling or de-energizing effect. Disease states are caused by energy blockages or an accumulation of excessive energy. Using colored light on the acupuncture meridians and points we are able to regulate the energy flow and treat disease.

There are 3 types of energy patterns in the Colorpuncture model,  endocrine, toxic and degenerative. Endocrine is the pre-disease state. The patient has symptoms but there is no visible pathology. The second type of disturbance in the energy pattern is the toxic state. This is when  tissue changes develop such as inflammation, congestion and blockages of energy flow in the body. The third type is the degenerative where the body begins to show destructive tissue changes. Scar tissue in the macula would be an example of this type.  The value of this classification is that specific therapies can be developed to heal the disease energy pattern.

An important use of Colorpuncture is to remove blockages that are preventing the person to heal. Often these blocks are related to emotional issues such as the grief associated with the loss of a loved one, or trauma such as a car accident which has caused a physical block that is preventing healing. The last category is conflicts that exist, such as issues that exist with a family member. In all these cases Colorpuncture can help to break the blockage and begin the healing process.

I find color puncture especially useful in patients that are not responding to therapies. Often after a  few Colorpuncture treatments therapies like microcurrent begin to work much better.

Complimentary Medicine Helps Reduce The Need for Reading Glasses

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

reading-glassesMany people with excellent eye sight discover their vision beginning to fail in their 40’s and 50’s. It is a shock to discover that small print is impossible to read, there is never enough light and your arms are never long enough! This is where the troublesome dependency on reading glasses begins! Can you turn back the clock or at least slow the ticking? What can be done? Vision therapy

The first step is good nutrition. Colorful foods will help give us colorful vision and reduce eye strain. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables which have bright colors. These are rich in antioxidants and bioflavonoids which are essential for healthy vision. Avoid foods that are toxic to your body and of course avoid alcohol and, if you have the unfortunate habit, do everything possible to stop smoking.

The second step is exercise. Dr. William Bates, a famous vision therapist, discovered that all eye disease is caused by stress around the eye. He believed that by reducing this stress dependency on glasses could be reduced or even eliminated. He developed several eye exercises to reduce stress and improve vision. For more information on the Bate’s exercises read chapter three in Healing the Eye the Natural Way.

Step three: heal your eyes from within with homeopathy. Homeopathy is a system of medicine which stimulates the body to heal itself. There are several homeopathic remedies that are useful for reducing eye strain and improving vision. One of these is Ruta which can help reduce eye strain and relieve the headaches from over worked eyes.

And finally, Step four: science to the rescue! There is a new procedure to “turn back the clock” and give you back your young reading eyes. The procedure is called Conductive Keratoplasty or CK. It is a recently approved FDA procedure. It uses no laser and no cutting is involved. How does it work? Radio frequency waves are delivered to the outer part of the eye. These waves reshape the cornea to improve reading vision. Over 14,000 procedures have been performed with an extremely high success rate. If you are over the age of 40, have had good vision all your life and now need reading glasses (and you hate them) this procedure may be just what you are looking for!

Attend a Healing the Eye and Wellness Seminar to begin to restore your eyesight and clarity of vision. These one and three day seminars focus on nutrition, homeopathy, stress reduction, meditation, the mind body connection and yoga for your eyes. Nutritional and Homeopathic evaluations along with treatments such as massage, acupuncture, microcurrent stimulation and chelation therapy will be available during the three day seminar.

Healing the Eye the Natural Way: Alternative Medicine and Age Related Macular Degeneration

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

age-related-macular-degenerationThe purpose of this article is to review the preliminary results from Macular Degeneration Clinics and clinical trials which are being conducted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Phoenix, Arizona.

The purpose of these trials is to scientifically compare the efficacy of several alternative methods in the treatment of macular degeneration. Three areas will be investigated: Homeopathy, Chelation and Microcurent Stimulation (MCS) These methods will be compared to a control group of patients receiving a macular degeneration vitamin and nutritional formula.  The purpose is to see if these treatments have any additional value over a nutritional supplement.  This is an ongoing study and I would like to share my preliminary results in this report.

Introduction to macular degeneration
Macular degeneration is the most common cause of untreatable blindness in the United States. It is estimated that over 15 million people suffer from this condition and the incidence will increase to 30 million with the aging of the baby boomers. . It commonly affects those over the age of 65 and increases with age.

Anatomy
The macula is a small area located in the central part of the retina responsible for high-resolution vision. The retina is responsible for transferring visual impulses to the optic nerve, which then takes these impulses to the occipital cortex for processing the visual impulse. There is a small area in the retina with a very high concentration of cones called the macula. This area is developed to process fine detailed vision. This area is necessary for reading and visualization of fine detail. Areas outside the macula process peripheral or outside vision.

Pathology
There are many factors related to the etiology of macular degeneration.  The most common cause is the arteriosclerotic process that takes place as we age. The macula has a very high metabolic needs compared to other areas of the body. It requires proper nutritional elements, oxygen and the elimination of waste products to function properly. Arteriosclerosis reduces the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the macula and will cause a dysfunction in the macula and ultimately degeneration. The increase levels of antioxidants are related to the development of macular degeneration. Antioxidants lead to the breakdown of important cellular structures which are necessary for proper macular functioning.  The earliest changes are the development of drusen.  These are deposits which develop at the base of the retinal pigment epithelial cells. Drusen are often accompanied by pigmentary abnormalities. This can either be hypo or hyperpigmentary changes. These changes then progess to atrophy or the dry macular degeneration or small choroidal vessels develop which result in leakage of blood or fluid. This is termed the wet macular degeneration.

Symptoms
Macular degeneration begins as a subtle change in the central vision. This can first be observed as distortion or hazy areas in the central vision. When focusing on straight vertical objects, such as a door, there may appear to be bending or waves on the edges. Many of  these early changes are detected by using an Amsler Grid. This is similar to a graph paper with vertical and horizontal lines. A patient is instructed to focus on the center of the paper and note if any of the lines are missing or distorted. The Amsler Grid is also a good method to document changes in existing macular degeneration. More advanced macular degeneration produces loss in the central vision. The vision becomes distorted gray and hazy and the patient is not able to see any detail but the peripheral vision is maintained. Macular degeneration rarely leads to complete blindness but the advanced changes will prevent a person from functioning with most activities.

Current Treatments

  • Vitamin supplements
  • Antioxidants, Zinc and Selenium
  • Stop cigarette smoking
  • Avoid ultraviolet light
  • Focal Laser treatment for the wet ARMD
  • Dry Assisted Photocoagulation
  • Photodynamic Therapy
  • Retinal Cell Transplant

Vitamin and nutritional therapy
There have been many studies to demonstrate that antioxidants and nutritional supplements may prevent and possibly reverse macular degeneration. The 1996 Multi-center Ophthalmic and Nutritional ARMD study showed that patients given a broad-spectrum antioxidant had better stabilization of their vision. This group was compared to a placebo group who lost an average of one line of vision. There are several minerals, which are important in the treatment and prevention of macular degeneration. In a study of 151 people with macular degeneration, those that took a zinc supplement had significant less visual loss than those who did not oral zinc. Selenium and vitamin E are known to function synergistically and selenium may be an important antioxidant in the treatment of ARMD. Two important carotenoids needed for the health of the retina are lutein and zeathanthin. They are needed to maintain the  macula lutea, the central area of the macula and they protect the eye against photo-induced damage. Studies show that animals deprived from this pigment develop macular degeneration. There are some studies which indicate that high consumption of these carotenoids protect the macula. (3)

Taurine is a sulfur containing amino acid which is a membrane stabilizer. It is concentrated in the retina of the eye and protects against macular degeneration (4)

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a system of medicine established by Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago. Homeopathy differs from conventional or allopathic medicine in several ways. Homeopathy looks at all of the symptoms or the totality of the person not just the disease before selecting a treatment.  Homeopathy does not treat a disease but the person who has the disease.  A homeopath, investigating a patient with macular degeneration, would need to obtain a complete health history, inquire about the mental and emotional disposition, physical make up, likes and dislikes etc. All this information is necessary in the proper selection of the homeopathic remedy, which will treat the whole person and the macular degeneration. The most important law in homeopathy is the Law of Similars.  This law states that symptoms, which are produced in a healthy individual taking a homeopathic remedy, will cure those symptoms in a diseased state.  For example it is well known that gold salts in toxic dosages will cause arthritis. Gold salts in small dosages are used to treat arthritis. Radiation as we know can cause cancer but low dosages of radiation are often used to treat cancer.   These homeopathy symptoms are based on scientific proving of remedies.  Characteristics of each remedy are studied by observing how a healthy individual reacts when taking a homeopathic remedy.  Information is also used from toxicology studies. This information is compiled in a repertory, which is a book of proving symptoms. Homeopathy also uses small dosages of medications to gently stimulate the body to heal itself. Small dosages avoid the side effects that so many medications can have.  The goal in homeopathy is to cure the person of disease. This approach is different than allopathic medicine in which medication is given to reduce the effects of disease not cure the condition. For example hypertensive medications will lower the blood pressure to prevent damage to the body. In most cases the person will need to continue medication all his life. Homeopathic treatment seeks to restore the health of the individual so the blood pressure will be normal with no medication.

Microcurrent Stimulation
Microcurrent stimulation (MCS) is a treatment in which a weak electric current is used to stimulate the retina and the diseased macula to restore sight. Interest in the procedure developed when Sam Snead, the retired professional golfer, under went a series of MCS treatments which improved the vision in his eyes that suffered from macular degeneration.

The MCS is different than the more commonly used TENS  (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation). TENS uses a higher voltage to block the nerve impulse and has wide application in pain control. It stimulates the pain suppressing nerve fibers to work against the pain carrying nerve fibers. MCS uses low voltage which to stimulate the natural healing mechanisms of the body. Robert Becker in The Body Electric, documents the relationship of electricity in life and healing.  Becker found that voltage differences develop in the body during injury and disease. An injury produces a positive charge in the area and sets up the voltage potential differences. It becomes a bio-electric battery waiting to be turned on. Studies show that the MCS facilitates the healing of the body. An article by Cheng et al (1982) studied the effect of micorcurrent on three variables necessary to the healing process; adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation, protein synthesis and membrane transport. His studies showed at low voltage (500 micro-amp) ATP generation in the rat skin increased almost 500% and amino acid transport was increased 30 to 40%. Microcurrent technology has been used as an effective treatment for the healing of bone fractures tendon and skin injuries.

In 1993, Dr. Merill Allen and Dr. Leland Michael published his preliminary study looking at the rate of development of ARMD in people using nutritional supplements and treated at the same time with a weak electrical current.   In 1997, Dr. John Jarding reported his results after treating 35 macular degeneration patients with a controlled microcurrent between 200 and 250 micro-amps applied to 8 points around the eye.  All 35 patients reported an improvement in there vision.

The Macular Degeneration Foundation has begun a national clinical trail to look at the effects of MCS and ARMD.

Chelation Therapy
Chelation therapy uses a compound EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid) which is a synthetic amino acid. It has the ability to chelate or attach itself to metals and minerals. Because of its greater attraction to heavy metals such as lead it was used in the 1940′s and 1950′s as an effective treatment for lead intoxication. It was noted that patients who were using chelation therapy for lead intoxication had improvements in their heart disease and circulatory problems. Because of this observation chelation therapy became a non-surgical method of treating the effects of arteriosclerosis. Chelation therapy has been used for more than 40 years for the treatment of arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and cerebral vascular disease and in preventive medicine.  (8) The removal of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury are important because they depress enzyme functions. Besides the removal of these heavy metals, EDTA  also removes calcium from aterioscerotic vascular walls. This helps to improve the elasticity of the vessels  and increases blood  flow through these vessels. EDTA also helps maintain the health of the intracellular membranes by reducing free radical pathology.  Arteriosclerosis has been postulated as an important risk factor for ARMD. (9) It is hypothesized that based on the evidence of EDTA roll in reversing arteriosclerosis that chelation may have beneficial effects in the treatment of ARMD. Morton Walker, author of the Chelation Way, states that chelation brings back circulation and vision in macular degeneration better than any other therapy. (10)

Material and Methods
Patients are divided in to 4 groupings. A total of 400 patients will be recruited. 100 patients in each in each of the following groups.
1) Nutritional Supplements only. The product used was the Macular Degeneration Formula Manufactured by Nutritional Research, LLC.  www.nutritionalresearch.net  The author works as a consultant for this company and he also has a financial interest in the company.
